Ciel Marronier is a PVE-oriented utility tank that leans heavily into DEF shred debuffs. Ciel applies a permanent 20% DEF shred debuff and her ultimate applies a short-lasting 80% DEF shred debuff on top of that, allowing her to single-handedly apply -100% DEF shred. For her extremely potent high DEF shred debuff and above average survivability (for cost), Ciel is considered one of the best frontline tanks in the game.
Ciel is highly valued for her ability to individually apply -100% DEF shred, something that previously needed multiple debuffers to achieve. DEF shred will provide a greater damage increase than an equivalent amount of ATK% (up to 100%, as you can’t shred more than 100% of a target’s DEF). PVE comps typically aim to mitigate 100% of the enemy’s DEF.
In PVE, Ciel is used in burst damage setups. Her burst of -100% DEF shred removes the need for other DEF shredders and pushes the damage ceiling by creating space in the team to fit more offensive (de)buffers. Ciel is universally appreciated in Raids and sees regular use in Danger Close. Of note, Ciel can struggle in Danger Close Expert mode due to the increased overall stats on bosses.
In PVP, Ciel periodically sees play as a striker frontline option. Depending on the weekly bans, certain weeks necessitate strong anti-defender damage dealers to punch through the frontline. Ciel can be used to punish comps that lean too heavily into killing defenders. As a striker, Ciel can become obscenely difficult for rangers to kill, especially with her damage tolerance fully stacked.
