Character Progression

Upgrading your Combatants is key to improving their combat performance. Chaos Zero Nightmare’s multitude of character progression systems can be overwhelming at first, so here is a clear step-by-step guide to help you get the most out of your Combatants.

Combatant Level and Promotion

Every Combatant has a Level, which determines their base ATK, DEF, and HP. You can increase a character’s level using Battle Memories and Units. Both of these currencies can be farmed through their respective Tactical Training stages using Aether.

Combatants reach a level cap every 10 levels and require Promotion in order to continue leveling up. The type of Promotion material required depends on the Combatant’s class. Like Battle Memories and Units, these materials can be obtained by spending Aether on their respective Tactical Training stages.

Your account level and main story progression determine how many times you can Promote a character. Every 10 account levels (Level 10, 20, 30…etc.), you have to clear a Promotion Stage before you can continue gaining account EXP.

Potential

Every Combatant can unlock their Potential by unlocking and upgrading nodes on their skill tree. The skill tree progresses linearly from Potential 1 to 7, with two branching paths at 3-1 and 5-1. As a general rule, these nodes follow this overall progression:

  • Potential 1: Randomly grants you one of their Rare Unique cards when entering Chaos through Epiphany.
  • Potential 2: Buffs basic card multipliers.
  • Potential 3: Buffs neutral card multipliers.
  • Potential 3-1: Improves a card with added mechanics or increased multipliers.
  • Potential 4: Buffs unique card multipliers.
  • Potential 5: Stat boost.
  • Potential 5-1: Increases card multipliers and increases them further when the character hits a stat threshold.
  • Potential 6: Stat boost.
  • Potential 7: Increases a specific multiplier or introduces a new mechanic that triggers when the character hits a stat threshold.

Unlocking a Potential node requires Growth Stones, Units, and occasionally boss drops. You can obtain Growth Stones by spending Aether on Potential Tactical Training stages. What type of Growth Stone a Combatant requires is determined by their Attribute (Passion, Instinct, Order, Justice, and Void), and harder Tactical Training stages grant higher rarity Growth Stones upon completion. You can obtain 3 boss drops per week from the Challenge tab of Tactical Training.

As you progress through the skill tree, unlocking more Potential nodes will require higher rarity Growth Stones. You can use Units to merge low rarity Growth Stones into a higher rarity, or dismantle higher rarity ones into lower-rarity ones. This process is inefficient compared to farming them directly, but can be very helpful if you are missing a few.

Some of the later nodes require boss drops to unlock. Because boss drops are time-gated, you should plan out which ones you want to unlock each week across all your different Combatants. If you don’t know which ones to prioritize, you can check our character reviews for a more detailed breakdown.

Manifest Ego

When you obtain a duplicate copy of a Combatant, you can Manifest Ego. Every Combatant has 6 Manifest Ego upgrades, which range from simple stat increases to mechanical changes that alter how a character is played.

You can obtain duplicate copies of a Combatant by Rescuing (pulling on the gacha banner) or purchasing the dupes directly using Moments of the Radiant Hero in the Combatant section of the Memory Archive shop.

Partners

Image

Partners are a type of equipment that you can assign to a Combatant character. They are the equivalent of weapons in other games and provide stat bonuses, a class-locked passive effect, and an Ego Skill.

For more information on Partners, you can check our Partner System Guide.

Memory Fragments

Memory Fragments are another type of equipment that provide stat bonuses to a character. They are the equivalent of gear, artifacts, or relics in similar games. You can obtain Memory Fragments by spending Aether in Memory Fragment Tactical Training stages.

Save Data

Image

You can generate Save Data for a Combatant by using them in a Chaos run. Save Data is a build that you can equip on a Combatant for certain stages. Save Data modifies a Combatant’s deck and grants Equipment obtained during the run, which can increase a Combatant’s stats and activate passive effects.

Prism Modules

Prism Modules are purely cosmetic upgrades for your Combatants’ cards. You can use a Prism Module to Restore Card Motion, which will animate the art on the chosen card. Each Combatant has their own type of Prism Module—they’re not interchangeable. Each Combatant has five cards that can be Restored. You have to spend one Prism Module per card.

Image

You can obtain Prism Modules by using Prism Lenses on the Prism Module banner, which allows you to select the 5-star you want to unlock animations for. 4-star Prism Modules are obtained randomly through the Prism Module banner and cannot be guaranteed.
