Review
Remember Cinq East Don? Now here comes the marginally cooler Cinq East Don. Like Cinq East Don, Cinq East Hong Lu’s kit revolves around stacking “Nerve Strike” by focusing on one target at a time while using Burn and Poise as a complement.
Starting with his 2 unique statuses:
Witnessed - Eastern Cinq - Buff that grants Offense Level based on the stacks, giving an extra Poise Potency on 2+ stacks and Poise Count at 3+ stacks.
Nerve Strike - Hong Lu - Debuff that gives Hong Lu either clash power, base power, or both, in that order based on the number of stacks when hitting the target with this debuff. Do remember that this debuff will conflict with other Cinq East IDs (currently only Cinq East Don). Meaning they will not benefit from their own effect if they have a different name than the one currently inflicted, although the stack will persist when inflicted with a new one to not punish this type of gameplay.
Now onto his passive, the always active one grants him the Witnessed - Eastern Cinq status based on the number of IDs with the “Cinq Association” tag on backup or support, and inflicts 1 stack of the Nerve Strike - Hong Lu debuff on base skill hit next turn. This passive can help Hong Lu with his Poise economy, but ONLY if you have nothing better to put on, as all of the Cinq IDs by the time of writing are very outdated and cannot keep up with the current meta.
His normal passive requires 2 Wrath and 2 Pride Owned, allowing him to inflict the Nerve Strike - Hong Lu debuff on clash win if the target already has Nerve Strike - Hong Lu, gives him a maximum of 2 Haste based on Poise Potency, and gives damage amplification. This passive can speed up Nerve Strike - Hong Lu and is pivotal if you are playing him with something like Cinq East Don, as he is guaranteed to have his own Nerve Strike - Hong Lu active as long as he wins the clash.
Lastly, his support passive requires 3 Wrath Res, inflicts 1 Bind, coupled with either Burn Potency or Count based on the number of Burn Count the target has. This support passive conflicts with Liu Hong Lu’s +1 Burn Count passive, so pick whichever one you need more.
On to his skills (a slight note that the calculation will include max stacks of Nerve Strike - Hong Lu) :
Skill 1 - Fa Jin - Base roll 13 - Max roll 14 (clash 16) - Nerve 15 (clash 17) - Reuse 23 - Horrible without max Nerve Strike - Hong Lu, but is used to gain early Poise Count
Skill 2 - Virescent Flame Palm - Base roll 16 - Max roll 21 - Nerve 22 (clash 23) - Reuse 29 - At 2+ Nerve Strike - Hong Lu, it is a fairly high-damage skill with the benefit of being positive Poise Count. Otherwise, it's a mid skill.
Skill 3 - Take the Hit to the Last Blow, Please? - Base roll 17 - Max roll 23 - Nerve 24 (clash 25) - Reuse 30 - Only requires 1 stack of Nerve Strike - Hong Lu for reuse, although it is recommended to use it at max to offset the Poise Count Negativity to -1. It's a very high-damage skill, especially on the last coin and on reuse if all the damage amplifications are active, combined with the crit multiplier from Poise.
Defensive Skill Evade - Base roll 14 - Max roll 15 - Nerve 16 - Nothing to talk about, just +3 Poise Count, good for early fights.
To conclude, he is just a Cinq East Don v2 with slightly more up-to-date numbers and mechanics. Unfortunately, it is not enough to earn him a spot in the currently overcrowded option of Burn IDs, which have their own merits, compared to Cinq East Hong Lu who is carried purely by damage numbers (which he can easily be outclassed by the other Burn options). In addition to that, he has a fatal flaw of poor Poise Potency gain, which delays the turn on which he starts dealing damage.
Burn - He is decent with Burn, although he offers nothing but pure damage.
Cinq - Better Poise economy when Cinq IDs are benched, but even with them, Hong Lu still can't reach 20 Poise Potency fast enough, and if they ever get put on the battlefield, they all lack Poise Potency generation. Furthermore, going in this route also conflicts with stronger teambuilding options such as HoS or other Burn IDs.
Decent single-target damage.
Nerve Strike - Hong Lu stacking relies on focusing one enemy.
No Nerve Strike - Hong Lu stacks means significantly lower damage.
High opportunity cost of using other Hong Lu IDs.
Horrible status infliction.
Bad poise potency gain.
