Review

Gianc is an Odd Affinity HP-scaling Nuker, focused on Damage with a side of self-healing and debuffing.

Skill 1

Gianc’s S1 is two parts, one active and one passive. The active deals a single hit of damage to a target based on Gianc’s max HP, then heals him by a percentage of his own lost HP.

Azure drifting is the passive component of the skill: at the start of Battle, before any player takes action, Gianc increases his Follow-up Attack Rate based on his max HP, and at the same time, he disables his own chance to crit.

Gianc has good Burst potential, and the Follow-up can further reinforce this aspect if he gets enough max HP from equipment. As lvl5 improves the consistency of his Follow-ups and his SPD, it’s recommended to fully level this skill, although getting S3 to lvl4 still takes priority.

Skill 2

S2 is a straightforward 1-hit AoE that damages all enemies based on Gianc’s max HP with a high chance of applying [Wound] for 1-2 turns on them.

Depending on your setup, Gianc can see his Debuffing potential improved by leveling this skill; however, past level 2, the damage won’t see any improvement. For Burst, level 2 is enough, although each following level improves his impact in long fights.

Skill 3

Cannon Rainfall, Gianc’s S3, is an AoE that deals damage differently to the targets: the main target gets a percentage of their own max HP removed, then Gianc also loses the same amount of HP, although he cannot die from this backlash. The secondary targets, on the other hand, take damage equal to a percentage of Gianc’s own max HP and have a high chance of being inflicted with [Weakness].

Because the main target has their HP removed, the damage is not reduced by DEF/Dmg Reduction, BB set, nor is it amplified by offensive Buffs/Debuffs.

This is Gianc’s main damage tool, and so raising it to at least lvl4 takes the highest priority. Afterwards, lvl5 is great for longer fights, but otherwise useless in Burst setups.

PVE

Gianc has a few compelling tools for PVE, to the point that there’s very little reason to ever field him. His berserk nature of losing health to deal damage can quickly go wrong if you get hit right after,he does not crit and his damage scales off HP which is usually the weakest stat for dealing damage in PVE, and his debuffs aren’t contributing much to improving clear times or making battles easier in the vast majority of cases. Even Weakness, an excellent Defensive option, is readily available on the likes of Plume, who totally eclipses Gianc in terms of debuffing and contributing to the damage of the team.

With DPS Animuses like Rosa or Batsby dominating the Odd Affinity, it’s unlikely Gianc will ever be in the spotlight for Odd favored fights in PVE.

PVP

Gianc doesn’t suffer from the same drawbacks in PVP. His HP scaling can make him both resilient and threatening damage-wise, while the targeted HP removal from his S3 can bypass most damage mitigation effects. His high Follow-up Rate can also add an element of luck (if his HP isn’t so high as to guarantee the follow up) that is hard to completely play around when facing him, which can sometimes end the fight unexpectedly fast.

With Wound and Weakness applicable in AoE, opponents will have a hard time recovering from his damage, but will also struggle taking him out once he’s done whacking his main target.

Conclusion

Gianc is a clear-cut case of a specialized unit, this time shining in PVP almost exclusively. Depending on the meta and the strategies employed by both players, he can either act as a thorn in the side of his opponent or as a massive threat that requires appropriate countermeasures.

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • HP removal on S3 bypasses Defenses and can’t be countered.

  • Great Damage in PVP.

  • High HP and self-sustain.

  • AoE Wound and Weakness with high chance to land even without ACC.

Cons

  • Not designed for PVE.

  • Cannot Crit unless passive is disabled.

For Early Game build tips when it comes to what modules and Shells to use before you start farming Red rarity, check our dedicated guide:

Best Build

The builds below are tailored more toward PVE and we only mention PVP in some places - like for alternative Shells or Module choices. But PVE is our focus.

Best Shells

For some DPS characters, we're showing two set of numbers. The top one on shows the performance in single-target scenario and the bottom on blue background in AoE scenario (4 targets). If there's just one number, it means the character only has single-target capability.

1

When a unit dies in battle, Purifies all Debuffs from the host Animus, restores 50% Max HP, and increases Turn Meter by 30%. Only triggers once if multiple units die simultaneously.

The Gator is truly the perfect Shell for pure HP characters - a stat boost and a Cleanse in case of death in your team. The Shell allows you to force the enemy focus on a very resilient character; else they will regenerate considerably.

After the original takes action, has a 100% chance to reduce the CD of 1 random skills on cooldown by 1 turn(s).

Allows you to reduce cooldown of a random ability, improving the cycling abilities of the character.

Halloween is important because of Gianc's rather long cooldowns. The main goal is to make him a very tanky HP character who doesn't need to play quickly, but rather to restrict the enemy with his S3 burst and the debuffs he can apply.

After the main body's turn, a Follow-up Attack on the main target dealing 240%+4200 damage, applies [SPD+] for 3 turns to the main Animus, applies and increases their Turn Meter by 25%.

A speed-based alternative for DPS characters to use instead of the mostly pure damage setups offered by Striker shells. Deals a large hit of damage, grants a 25% gauge boost, and offers the wearer the [SPD+] boost with 100% uptime on use. The downside of using this shell on DPS is that the matrixes are mostly support-focused, leading to suboptimal 12/8/6 set-ups or causing you to break sets and run 12P Swiftrush and an 8P set of your choice. Despite this downside, it can still be some characters’ top option. As with all speed-based sets on DPS, in teams that have gauge boosts for the DPS, it will lose value. Also, loses most of its value when used in teams that already have a team member granting the [SPD+] buff with good uptime.

Jackal is best used to cycle the character's AoE debuffs as quickly as possible. It is further used to prioritize taking advantage of Vulnerability and anti-healing, rather than maximizing HP.

PVP Setup

Below you can find some alternative setups you can use, but only in PVP.

After the main body's turn, a Follow-up Attack on the main target dealing 240%+4200 damage, applies [SPD+] for 3 turns to the main Animus, applies and increases their Turn Meter by 25%.

Also, loses most of its value when used in teams that already have a team member granting the [SPD+] buff with good uptime.

Jackal Guard with full Speed focus is probably Gianc's most devastating build to break open games early on. The huge nuke on one target, while being a 60k HP beast and having as high as 330 SPD, is quite a devastating combo.

Best Module Sets:

    Swiftrush [12/12]

Gator is the Tank build version that fits in more regular Turn 2 teams. It still provides the massive nuke but will often struggle to kill enemies early, as they will put up protective measures before it gets to play. Although this gives him a ton more staying power and we think anyone who has played against a Gator anything can attest to how annoying it can be when you have to try to kill anybody but them first.

Stat comments (PVE)

Gianc is a Bruiser that doesn't offer much for the current PVE meta. As a DPS who can't Crit, he ended up losing a lot of potential in the PVE meta. His kit doesn't have any strong debuffs or utility that justify using him in any team.

  • Main Stats:
    • HP: Gianc is a Bruiser who does DMG based on his max HP, thus it's recommended to stack as much HP as possible.
    • SPD: Good stat to have since Gianc only cares about HP and SPD.
Stat comments (PVP)

Gianc is a very unique character that doesn't scale that much off of any stats for his damage and provides a huge early game nuke on one character. He is currently the safest nuker in the game for dealing with one singular enemy, as Liliam often has quite a few caveats to work with at the moment.

  • Main Stats:
    • SPD: Gianc really wants to go fast, but you want to make sure he is lined up with a Follow-up unit, as he will struggle to oneshot anything himself; he just puts literally anyone at really low HP.
    • HP: Hitting his HP thresholds is very important for his damage, with a minimum of 60k on a Swift build or 70k on a Wellspring build being mandatory.
  • Conditional Stats:
    • Effect ACC: Having a bit of Effect ACC on subs is nice, but doesn't matter too much.

It is not recommended to spend Lattices on him for PVE. In PVP, his S2 skill ups are mainly for QoL and not necessary to play him.
