Spec Overview

Introduction

The Frostbeam spec is entirely focused on executing lengthy channels of its namesake (Frostbeam) to take advantage of its ability to deal ever-increasing damage the longer you cast. While channeling, you’ll also multi-cast Frost Mage's other channeled ability, Tidepool, simultaneously for huge AoE damage. Frostbeam is the lowest action count class in the game, making it easy to play and ideal for those without fast reaction times, but it’s not great on autoplay.

The Spec has some quirks, though. While cooldowns are unavailable and resources are limited, you’ll have to start and stop your Frost Beam casts to conserve energy, and while using Frost Beam, your movement is heavily slowed.

Stat Tuning

For your Purple lines, you should balance the allocation between Cast Speed % and Magic Attack % for optimal performance.

Your Gem Strategy should prioritize splitting slots evenly between Haste and Crit. Haste is a highly valuable stat for this build, making its pursuit worthwhile.

This configuration results in the following target stats (including the 3.5% trait bonus applied to your highest stat):

  • Haste: ~35%
  • Mastery: > 25%
  • Versatility: > 15%
  • Crit Rate: ~ 20%

Resources

Ice Cores - The two floating orbs that have been with us since the beginning allow us to shoot Ice Arrows when we use some of our skills

Guides

One of the core resources used to fuel key abilities such as Frozen Gale, Maelstrom, and Frostbeam. Our talent tree significantly improves Ice Energy generation and discounts key ability costs, such as Frostbeam which are all key to maximizing our damage output.

Guides

Frost Crystal - In Frostbeam, Frost Crystals operate as more of a buff than a resource. Each Frost Crystal we possess will:

  • Increase Frost Beam damage by 15% (20% with talents) for a total of 45% (60%) at the cost of increasing its Ice Energy consumption by 30% for a total of 90%.
  • Grant 5% Ice DMG at maximum crystals with the Frost Tide talent allocated.
Skills Explained
Fixed Skills
  • Imagine
    Raincall Surge
    - Our basic attack isn’t ideal to use, but has a 10% Our basic attack, and ability we usually try to avoid casting unless at 0 Ice Energy with no other Ice Energy restoring options available.
    • Situations that require us to use basics should be avoided at all costs.
  • Frostbeam - Frost Beam is our main source of damage in and outside of our Burst and is what you'll be spending the majority of your time casting and spending your resources on. Using it causes your character to channel, dealing damage continuously that hits in an AoE by consuming 12 Frost Energy every 0.3 seconds. The damage frequency of this ability directly scales with Cast Speed. It will continue to cast until cancelled or you run out of energy.
  • Imagine
    Glacier Hymn
    - Summons a Glacier atop enemies, which deals large damage, freezes targets, and summons an Ice Domain under our feet. When we stand in the domain, we gain 25% increased Ice DMG. When enemies enter it, they freeze temporarily. We use this as our burst rotation opener.
Mandatory Skills
  • Imagine
    Tidepool
    - Channel to summon a water tornado that deals solid AoE damage. With talents, this ability can be used while Frostbeam is being cast, eliminating any downside in using it.
    Imagine
    Tidepool
also scales on haste and is a major contributor to our high AoE damage.
  • Imagine
    Maelstrom
    -
    Imagine
    Maelstrom
summons a whirlpool that pulls in enemies and provides us with 2 Ice Energy per enemy hit per tick, which can be upgraded to recover 200% more with talents. Maelstrom is our main Ice Energy generator, especially in AoE. Usually used before long Frostbeam casts.
  • Imagine
    Permafrost
    - GGrants up to +21% Haste, +1040 Flat Haste, and 6 Ice Energy per second for 10 seconds. Best used in combination with
    Imagine
    Glacier Hymn
to maximize our damage by stacking their buffs. Between talents, stats, and the recovery
    Imagine
    Permafrost
allows for dramatically longer Frost Beam casts.
Flex Skills (Choose 1)
  • Imagine
    Crystal Veil
    - Grants 1 Frost Crystal on use and another every 3 seconds after. We don’t use this as a part of our rotation, but it can be used to build Frost Crystals before combat, ensuring we start at maximum damage.
  • Imagine
    Frost Shelter
    - A powerful defensive alternative to
    Imagine
    Crystal Veil
that makes us invincible for 5 seconds on use. The go-to option in challenging content where threatening boss mechanics are in play.

Talents

Best Talents
Important!

Embedded is our recommended core max-level Frostbeam talent tree containing all the specs' top talents.

Gameplay Altering Talents

Most of our talents just help us do what we’re already planning on doing better, but some have a drastic impact on our itemization and rotation. Below is an outline of all the gameplay-altering effects you need to be aware of in the Frostbeam spec and Base Frost Mage talents.

Base Frost Mage Tree
  • Secondary Amp - This provides us with a +3.5% increase to our highest flat stat out of Crit, Haste, Luck, Mastery, and Versatility. This is strongest on either Crit or Luck. Ensure one of these is the highest stat at all times.
    • This accounts for the highest stat after self buffs, party buffs, or imagines.
  • Intellect Cooling - Provides us with a 10% cooldown reduction, allowing us to execute our burst windows sooner.
  • Cold Stream - Increases Ice Energy by 25, and for every 1% Haste we have, we also gain 1% Ice Energy Regeneration Speed, boosting Haste’s value.
Frostbeam Tree
  • Tide Mastery - One of our most important talents, which allows us to cast Frostbeam and Tidepool at the same time.
  • Crystal Resonance - Causes our Frost Beam to have a 30% chance to cause our Ice Cores to fire Ice Arrows, which make up a substantial portion of our damage.
    • Ice Arrows can critically strike but cannot lucky hit.
  • Frost Tide - Causes Frostbeam to now generate Frost Crystals. This ensures we’re at max even if not running Crystal Veil or pre-stacking them.
  • Rapid Ice Arrow - Causes Frostbeam to fire 4 Ice Arrows during Permafrost (instead of 2), significantly increasing our damage. Unfortunately, this talent comes with the downside that our Lucky Hit Damage during permafrost is halved; this tradeoff is still worth it, though.
  • Endless Tide - Causes each ice arrow to extend Permafrost duration by 0.5 seconds up to 5 seconds. This is incredibly easy to max out, meaning this talent simply extends Permafrost duration from 10s to 15s.
  • Frost Domain - The reason our Ultimate Glacier Hymn grants us a 25% Ice Dmg increase. Another must-have talent for maximizing our burst damage.
  • Quick Chant - Provides +500 Flat Haste at all times and also accelerates ability usage by 15% during Permafrost. This much Flat Haste allows us to allocate our stat points toward other stats on gear while also being very strong before achieving high stat levels.
    • Ability Usage speed is not Cast Speed% and does not allow Frost Beam to bypass the Cast Speed% tick rate.
  • Icy Calm - Similar to the talent in our base tree that provides flat stats, this talent does the same. It provides 2% to our highest stat per enemy hit for 5 seconds, up to a maximum of 5 enemies. This is a free 10% to our highest stat in AoE scenarios

Crit Rate

Haste

Luck

Mastery

Versatility

Main Stats
  1. Crit Rate - Despite not being a thumbs-up stat and the fact Frost Beam doesn’t have any specific Crit-based activation talents, it is still one of our best stats due to our high frequency of damage.
    • Stat Goal: The value of Crit will increase a bit more with higher copies of Muku Chief, since he provides us with additional Crit Damage. With that said, Versatility is also an excellent stat for us. Try to stack them evenly while allowing Crit to be a bit higher when possible.
  2. Haste - One of our thumbs up stats and present on all of our set gear and class weapons, making it unavoidable. An outstanding stat in theory and practice, it provides additional ticks for our Frostbeam and Tidepool which are our main damaging abilities.
  3. Mastery - Mastery, our other “Thumbs up” stat, grants us 0.4% Ice Damage and 1% increased Ice Energy generation per 1% of Mastery. Our talents already have a solid amount of Ice Damage, and the Ice Regen, while nice, isn’t build-defining. With that said, the Ray’s Swan Song talent, which doubles the value of Mastery while active, makes building it solid despite this.
    • You’ll get a colossal amount of Mastery for free on class gear and set bonuses, so spend your other gear slots on Versatility if you can to take advantage of its separate damage multiplier.
  4. Versatility - This stat is always beneficial, providing an extra multiplicative boost on top of everything else. Stats suffer diminishing returns, so building a bit of Versatility can help a lot more for damage than overcommitting to one or two other stats.
    • Attempt to keep this stat balanced or slightly ahead of Mastery, as they have a similar effectiveness for the spec.
    • Keep in mind that you can not gem Versatility, so you’ll likely aim for it as your gear’s 3rd line.
  5. Luck - Since Permafrost lowers our lucky hit multiplier by half, this stat is not as effective as it could be. While not completely useless, it isn’t a stat we want over others in most cases.
Bonus Stats

In gear slots you’re not using Set Gear in and which aren’t taken up by your class's signature Class weapon (if you have it), prioritize the following Purple Stats:

Helmet, Armour, Gloves, Boots

Intellect %

Weapons & Accessories

Cast Spd % = MATK% > Ranged DMG% = DMG% vs. Bosses

Set Gear

Frostbeam’s 2P and 4P set bonuses are both definitely worth equipping as soon as you’re able to complete Raids and are better than Purple Bonuses. Here is what they do:

2-piece SET

Increases Frostbeam DMG by 10% with a further 5% DMG increase to primary target.

4-Piece SET

Frostbeam DMG has a 10% chance to increase your Mastery by 10% for 8s.

Class weapon

Our Class weapon is also definitely worth using over purple stats. Instead of a purple stat it grants:

  • 8% Ranged DMG.
  • Increased stats.
Best Modules
Note!

The percentage value shows the impact of the module compared to not having any module equipped (each module is calculated based on it being +6).

Here are the best modules for Frost Mage - Frostbeam - listed in priority order:

Lvl 3: +0.99%

Lvl 6: +7.35%

Elite Strike
Elite Strike

A great module for damage, since we are often fighting at least one Elite or higher-level enemy. We have more Elemental damage than Generic damage, so any sources are welcome. Not active outside of Elites/Bosses.

Lvl 3: +0.99%

Lvl 6: +6.90%

Intellect Boost
Intellect Boost

A good module for additional Magic Attack, INT, and bonus generic damage, things we can always use.

Lvl 3: +0.85%

Lvl 6: +5.23%

Cast Focus
Cast Focus

Cast SPD% is a very important stat and does well due to our Frostbeam and Tidepool ticks being reliant on it.

Lvl 3: +0.99%

Lvl 6: +5.04%

Special Attack
Special Attack

It provides Adaptive attack and main stats while also providing Elemental Damage for our Special attacks.

A large amount of our damage comes from Frostbeam, making this module a good choice in theory. However, we gain a lot of Elemental DMG%, diminishing this module's performance and gains with high end builds.

Lvl 3: +0.27%

Lvl 6: +4.89%

Crit Focus
Crit Focus

Provides additional Crit DMG, since we only have some from Muku Chief, this is a good option. This synergizes well with our Ice Arrows’ Crit Rate buff and the crit rate that we build.

Lvl 3: +0.27%

Lvl 6: +1.16%

Luck Focus
Luck Focus

It provides Luck DMG Multiplier, but since we are not building Luck it's not a good option.

Top Gold Imagines
  1. Imagine
    Muku Chief
    - Muku Chief provides passive CRIT DMG alongside a powerful active ability that grants a larger CRIT DMG boost as well as a flat Crit Rate. Furthermore, it has two charges, allowing superior uptime compared to other Imagines. Chief is one of our best options due to us building crit rate, and our talent that increases the crit rate of Ice Arrows.
  2. Imagine
    Celestial Flier
    - The combination of massive passive +Flat Haste in addition to a +% Haste bonus on use allows us to get more ticks of Frostbeam and Tidepool. Due to this, it will outperform all other options except Muku Chief.
Top Purple Imagines
  1. Imagine
    Muku Scout [A5]
    - Muku Scout gives us a passive 15% MATK provided we are consistently hitting attacks. Upon activation, it doubles the stacks, giving a very potent and uncommon 30% MATK buff. Despite his description, Muku Scout also works for Magic Attack. Due to our high amount of multi-hits, refreshing or starting up this passive is simple. Due to stat saturation, Scout outperforms many other Gold options until they have high Advancements..
  2. Imagine
    Inferno Goblin Mage [A5]
    - Inferno Goblin Mage provides passive INT +10% and has an active skill of an additional 20% INT. With our conversion rate of 10 INT to 1 MATK, and the talent node that provides additional Ice Energy relative to our INT, this is a strong option for increasing our damage.
  3. Imagine
    Lizardman Mage [A5]
    - Lizardman Mage is the generic Ice DMG% Imagine, granting 7.5% passive Ice DMG% and a further 16% on use. While solid does not compete with imagines higher on this, as we already have so much Ice DMG%.
Best Consumables
Culinary
  • Seabreeze Special - Grants Elite/Boss DMG% as well as a strong amount of Magic ATK, making it the superior choice.
  • Bearcut Patty / Hearty Stewmix - More More Magic ATK than Seabreeze Special, but without the Elite/Boss DMG% is less powerful, good backup food.
Alchemy
  • Ice Serum - The best and only choice for our Alchemy consumable when aiming for maximum damage.
Best Gems
  1. Ruby - Intellect (Crit) - This will be our best gem option, since there isn’t an opportunity to gem Versatility.
Best Emblems

For optimal value from your Emblem Core, aim to upgrade the Emblem nodes at an even pace. When prioritizing damage output and utility, follow this leveling sequence:

  1. Adaptation
  2. Affinity
  3. Resistance
  4. Raid > Strong Attack
  5. Tenacity
For the Emblem Core the priority is:

Void Corruption Arcane > Void Corruption Pulse > Void Corruption Power

Rotation & How to Play

How To Play
Burst Rotation

The goal of our burst rotation is to stack as many cooldowns and damage multipliers together as we can, then cast Frostbeam and

Imagine
Tidepool
together until they expire, making for one of the simplest rotations in the game. Execute the rotation below for optimal damage:

Note

Not all your burst rotations will have

Imagine
Tidepool
s cooldown waiting for it.

Tip

Before combat, you may optionally use

Imagine
Crystal Veil
to pre-stack Frost Crystals if you have it equipped to lower ramp-up time slightly.

  • Use Imagines if available.
  • Use
    Imagine

    .
  • Channel Frostbeam.
  • Cast
    Imagine
    Tidepool
    as soon as Frostbeam begins.

Continue channeling until completely out of energy, then transition to the Downtime rotation.

Downtime Rotation

Downtime is all about dealing as much damage as possible while we wait for cooldowns to return. The best way to go about this is still to use Frostbeam while generating Frost Energy with

Imagine
Maelstrom
. However, without cooldowns active, we won't have enough Frost Energy regen to channel it for long periods. To get around this, we constantly start and stop the cast to improve energy economy. Here is the priority:

Tip

We can cancel out of Frostbeam by pressing the button again or by dodging out of it. Use whichever is most comfortable and applicable to the situation.

  • Imagine
    Maelstrom
    when available
  • Frostbeam until 2 sets of Ice Arrows fire, then cancel and repeat.
Tips & Tricks

When using Maelstrom, it can be annoying to try to target the center enemy of a group or try to catch a melee monster that is running after the tank. To avoid this hassle and place Maelstrom exactly where you want to, instead of on top of an enemy target, you can enable Free Cast Mode in the settings.

Guides
Auto Viability
Can Frostbeam be played on auto?

Auto-play is not recommended for Frostbeam as the AI uses many cooldowns at the wrong time, ruining overall damage potential. Also, Frostbeam is not an action-heavy class, meaning you don’t have to worry about missing ability timings due to ping or input lag. Finally, the AI is not able to cancel Frostbeam during the downtime rotation to conserve Frost Energy, ruining our resource economy, and it also does not align cooldowns correctly.
