Borgne is a DPS through and through. He is very straightforward, and all he wants to do is deal damage (with a side of Dispel). First of all, Borgne’s passive states that he cannot deal any Critical hits, no matter what. Secondly, it increases his Max HP by 560% of his attack, which makes him especially tanky for a damage dealer. Then, 30% of his (now boosted) Max HP is added to all of his attacks.

His S3 has a very high multiplier, starting at an AOE equal to 480% of his attack, and deals an extra 100% damage for every enemy that is defeated by that skill, for a total of up to 780% damage. His ultimate also dispels 1 buff from every target. Considering his high HP as a DPS, it is also important to note that his S1, which you will be using a lot, heals 60% HP of the damage dealt.

Overall, while early on he works really well as he doesn't need much to scale, since you don't need to build crit on him, just ATK%. Still, this is also a con as he's missing out on anything crit related (Shells, Modules, and buffs), so once other DPS obtain what they need, they can easily catch up to him and even overcome him.

Due to his straightforwardness in the kit, buffing his damage is all you need for him to perform well. Through Skill CD decrease from Tsukiyo Mi and Lily, and damage buffs from units like Freya and DokiDoki, Borgne will be dealing a lot of damage.

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Deals quite a lot of damage.

  • Very tanky for a DPS.

  • Can selfheal, which makes him very hard to kill.

Cons

  • Can't crit, which limits his Shell and Module options,

  • It also prevents him from benefiting from Crit scaling - early on, he will feel insanely strong, but the more gear your Crit DPS will get on their gear, the further he will fall behind.

Best Build

The builds below are tailored more toward PVE and we only mention PVP in some places - like for alternative Shells or Module choices. But PVE is our focus.

Best Shells

For some DPS characters, we're showing two set of numbers. The top one on shows the performance in single-target scenario and the bottom on blue background in AoE scenario (4 targets). If there's just one number, it means the character only has single-target capability.

After the main body's turn, a Follow-up Attack on the main target dealing 240%+4200 damage, applies [SPD+] for 3 turns to the main Animus, applies and increases their Turn Meter by 25%.

A speed-based alternative for DPS characters to use instead of the mostly pure damage setups offered by Striker shells. Deals a large hit of damage, grants a 25% gauge boost, and offers the wearer the [SPD+] boost with 100% uptime on use. The downside of using this shell on DPS is that the matrixes are mostly support-focused, leading to suboptimal 12/8/6 set-ups or causing you to break sets and run 12P Swiftrush and an 8P set of your choice. Despite this downside, it can still be some characters’ top option. As with all speed-based sets on DPS, in teams that have gauge boosts for the DPS, it will lose value. Also, loses most of its value when used in teams that already have a team member granting the [SPD+] buff with good uptime.

Jackal guard is one of Borgne's best options despite not specifically being a "DPS" shell. The SPD bonus, Advance, decently sized hit and the fact that Borgne has trouble taking full advantage of most offensive focused Matrix sets due to his inability to Crit, all result in this Shell being a top option for him in fights where he has a chance to cycle through multiple rotations and capitilize on the huge SPD increase.

Best Module Sets:

  • 12 set:
    Matrix
    Swiftrush [12/12]

  • 8 set:

    Onslaught [8/12]
    >
  • 6 set: None - the optimal set combo requires you to use a 8-pc set not present on the shell, so you have no place for a 6 PC Inferno set.

You can use

Black Flag
Black Flag
as a good alternative early on instead of Jackal Guard - it also provides SPD+ buff and turn meter advance. Basically, it's the same shell, but lower rarity and weaker. Use the following module combination with it:

  • 12 set:
    Matrix
    Swiftrush [12/12]
  • 8 set:
    Matrix
    Bramble [8/8]
  • 6 set: None - early one you can't use an Inferno set.

After the main body acts, it performs a [Follow-up Attack] on the primary target, dealing 2 instances of 110% damage each. If a [CRIT] occurs, it increases the main body Animus’s [CRIT DMG] by 6%, up to a maximum of 10 stacks.

Consistent and often best in slot option for most DPS characters when it comes to raw damage output in single target and often cases AoE. Deals 2 sizable hits on a 3 turn cooldown and grants a relatively quickly stacking buff amounting to 60% CRIT DMG once fully charged. Also has more flexible DPS matrixes than other options thanks to it possessing 12P Swiftrush.

As an alternative to the options above White Fang is also an acceptable generic option for Borgne despite him not gaining anything from its CRIT DMG buff. This is because the matrixes on it are a little more suitable for Borgne than others, and both hits of White Fang each apply his 30% HP multiplier passive.

Specialist Shells

Below you can find some alternative Shells you can use - though it's mainly for PVP scenarios.

1

Before the owner takes action, if the owner has any debuffs, dispels 2 debuff(s) and increases their Effect RES by 25% for every 1 debuff(s) dispelled, lasting for 2 turn(s).

A PVP-focused shell option offering a 2-turn debuff cleanse and up to 50% Effect RES at turn start with a 4-turn cooldown. A solid option for characters who need to ensure they aren’t taken out of the fight by stuns, freezes, or other debilitating effects on their opening turn.

2

Triggers when the main body takes DMG greater than 25% of Max HP within a turn, healing the main body for 25% Max HP and increasing Turn Meter progress by 25%.

A strong personal sustain option for characters, granting them a 25% max HP restore and 25% gauge boost upon taking hits within a single turn greater than 25% of their max HP (on a 2-turn cooldown). Has situational use in PVE but shines the most in PVP, granting your teams extra healing and gauge boost on a semi-frequent cooldown.

3

When the owner Animus is about to die, halves their current Turn Meter, removes all effects on them, recovers 60% of their Max HP, and puts them into a 1-turn [Iced] state.,

The cooldown of the skill can't be reduced.

Allows the wearer to cheat death once every 6 turns. Upon dying, they will instead recover 60% HP and enter a special state, becoming immune to turn meter reductions, debuffs, buffs, and also gaining 200% increased DEF until the start of their next turn. A powerful option for keeping vulnerable high-value units alive in PVP.

6 debuffs

6/12:  CRIT Rate +12%

12/12:  CRIT Rate +12%. When attacking, for each debuff or control effect on the target, DMG increases by 6%, up to 36%.

Strongest Pure DPS 12P set for most characters, offering a maximum of 36% increased damage while the target has 6 debuffs. Not easy to build up to or maximize the full effect. The set does not boost Shell damage. While Borgne cannot critically strike, thus wasting the stat portion of this set, he can take advantage of the DMG% bonus gained based on debunffs. With enough Debuffs on the enemy this set will still be one of his best for raw damage.

112.7%

6/12:  CRIT DMG +18%

12/12:  CRIT DMG +18%. The first three instances of damage dealt by Animus during the turn increase by 25%, 15%, and 5% respectively.

A strong but character-dependent 12P DPS option. Grants a diminishing DMG% boost to attacks that is most powerful for single-hit abilities and weaker on characters with many multi-hit abilities. The boost does not apply to FuA or Shells. Like Momentum, Borgne can't make use of the CRIT DMG on this set, but can make use of the DMG% portion it provides, making it decent despite the fact in single target Borgne's ultimate becomes a multi-hit attack.

116.82%

4/12:  SPD +8%

8/12:  SPD +20%

12/12:  SPD +35%

A solid option for DPS characters planning to fight in extended battles or who value taking initiative in the initial turn order. Loses value when damage dealers are able to rely on their teammates for gauge boosting instead of their own Speed.

6/12:  CRIT Rate +12%

4/12:  ATK +10%

8/12:  ATK +25%

12/12:  ATK +45%

Generic DPS option for ATK scalers. Loses out to more specialised options, but is accessible. Despite being an ATK% addict, Borgne already gets alot of it elsewhere making the DMG% or SPD options from the 12P slot more attractive.

110.23%

4/8:  ATK +10%

8/8:  ATK +10%. After the Animus uses an attack skill, there is a 20% chance to launch Follow-up Attack on the main target.

Grants all offensive actions a 20% chance to cause the wearer to use their Basic ATK. Most powerful in single-target scenarios and on characters with potent Basic Attacks that have passive effects tied to them. Thanks to Borgne's passive his basic attacks hit hard on top of healing him making triggering additional ones with battlewill a top option among his 8P choice for single target.

109.61%

4/12:  SPD +8%

8/12:  SPD +20%

12/12:  SPD +35%

A solid option for DPS characters planning to fight in extended battles or who value taking initiative in the initial turn order. Loses value when damage dealers are able to rely on their teammates for gauge boosting instead of their own Speed.

107.04%

4/8:  ATK +10%

8/8:  ATK +10%. When Attacking, if the target's HP is above 50%, additionally ignore 30% of their DEF.

A solid alternative to Fury and other DPS 8P sets in teams that do not have access to [-DEF]. In these teams, it will perform above its listing, giving it a chance to compete with and outperform other options. Gets worse the more DEF ignore and reductions you have.

104.9%

12/12:  HP +45%

Generic option for HP scalers. Loses out to more specialized options, but is accessible.

111.42%

6/6:  SPD +15% & ATK +20%

Best set for most ATK-based DPS thanks to it being present on most of the best DPS Shells. It loses significant value in teams where teammates can allow the DPS to run low-speed builds, making Furyedge a better choice.

107.21%

6/6:  SPD +15% & Effect ACC +20%

The go-to option for most supports, thanks to its presence on many of the best supportive Shells and the strong SPD and Effect ACC it grants. Can be used on some DPS setups if Shell requirements demand it.

101.31%

6/6:  HP +25% & Effect ACC +20%

A non-speed alternative to Swiftsmite offering HP% instead. Usually not the preferred option, but may need to be used to fit within shell restrictions. It may also be used on HP stackers or tanky builds.

1

6/12:  Effect RES +18%

12/12:  Effect RES +18%. When the total DMG taken in a turn exceeds 20% of Max HP, the excess DMG is additionally reduced by 55%.

Exceptional anti-burst defensive set, most notably used in PVP to prevent enemies from one-shotting your team with aggressive combo compositions. It can also be used in specific PvE encounters, but it is far more niche.

2

4/8:  DEF +10%

8/8:  DEF +10%. Upon hit, Animuses have a 25% chance to counterattack with a basic attack.

Incredibly potent specialist set for DPS and Support characters. Grants the wearer a 25% chance upon being attacked to use their Basic ATK along with all its passive effects. Most powerful on characters with potent Basic Attacks that have passive effects and/or can redirect attacks toward themselves.

3

4/8:  HP +10%

8/8:  HP +10%. At the start of each wave of battle, grants Immunity for 1 turn. Immunity = [Cannot be inflicted with any debuff].

Grants immunity to the wearer at the start of battle, protecting them from controlling effects. Primarily used in PVP to counter control compositions dominating your team - more of a niche pick in PVE.

4

4/8:  DEF +10%

8/8:  DEF +10%. After being attacked, advances Turn Meter by 10%.

A powerful specialist option for Supports and, in some cases, DPS characters. When used in PVP, it can allow you to ‘catch up’ against teams that move before you, giving you a chance to fight back. In PvE, it can be a strong gauge boosting tool in fights against many enemies or bosses that hit your team incredibly frequently.

Stat comments

Borgne has four stats to pay attention to across gear:

  • ATK% / ATK: The primary way to scale Borgne's damage is by stacking as much ATK as possible. Borgne cannot CRIT, but instead he gains both HP% and ATK% multipliers for each of his abilities (his HP% passive also gets added to Shells that hit enemies). As a split scale,r you might be tempted to mix in HP% as well as ATK for Borgne's build, but due to Borgne's passive which grants him 500% of his ATK at the start of battle as FLAT HP for the fight this isn't efficient. Maxing out ATK works towards contributing to all of his kit and shells damage multipliers at once instead of only doing one or the other.
  • SPD: When you're not stacking more ATK than you not what to do with you should focus the rest of your attention on SPD as it's the only other efficient way to scale Borgne's damage, allowing him to loop faster thus dealing higher DPS. As the harder to stat to acquire than ATK it should take priority on gear that has it available.
  • Effect ACC: Borgne's ultimate is capable of dispelling buffs from targets with 100% base chance. In endgame this wont be guaranteed to hit without some Effect ACC, but don't focus on the stat at the cost ATK or SPD. This stat is completely optional.
  • HP% / HP: If you're looking for more ways to power up your Borgne HP and HP% while not as good as ATK or SPD will boost Borgne's damage and survivability albeit less than the other stats.

All of Borgne's skill ups are valuable, but when playing him with a focus on damage, we recommend targetting his Skill 2 first to max out the HP% multiplier applied to his abilities and hit based shells. After that both his Skill 3 and Skill 1 are viable next best choices depending if you value sustain (Skill 1) or more damage from a reduced ultimate cooldown (Skill 3).
