Whimpering Wastes

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Very high single-target and AoE damage alike, all the while providing small but easily refreshed Shields for extra sustainability;

  • Able to function with premium teammates and without — has amazing F2P options which allow her to perform even without high vertical investment;

  • Completely stops time during her second Ultimate, meaning you’re fully invulnerable during the cast;

  • Summons a REALLY cool blazing sun in the sky when casting her second Ultimate. How was that necessary??

Cons

  • About half of her damage is concentrated in her second Ultimate — backloaded damage isn’t optimal for killing several groups of small enemies like in Whimpering Wastes;

  • Near-unusable in quickswap compositions due to the way her Outro works;

  • Shields don’t leave you immune to interruption; be wary to dodge enemy attacks so your rotation doesn’t get slowed down by enemy attacks;

  • Try to read any of her ability descriptions aside from her Resonance Skill (just kidding, might as well go read a Shakespeare play instead).

Review

Augusta is a 5-star Electro Broadblade DPS whose focus is on dealing high Heavy Attack damage to enemies by activating a time-stop Ultimate stance where she attacks enemies in quick succession, dealing lots of damage in the blink of an eye. Much like her Electro element would suggest, in spite of wielding a heavy weapon class, Augusta is capable of unleashing many attacks in quick succession to tear down her enemies.

Key Mechanics

Let’s get the most important abilities of Augusta out of the way first: her 3 unique resources.

  • The first of which is Prowess: this is her first Forte gauge used to cast Enhanced Heavy Attacks and is obtained when most of her abilities deal damage.

  • The second is Ascendancy: this is her second Forte gauge restored via Basic Attacks, Intro skill, her first Ultimate and her base Resonance Skill. It allows her to cast an enhanced Resonance Skill to gain her final resource, Majesty.

  • Majesty has 2 points, 1 of which is acquired via her Outro and the other is acquired via an enhanced Resonance Skill with full Ascendancy. When 2 points are obtained, Augusta can unleash her second Ultimate for massive damage, ending her rotation.

Therefore, Augusta’s goal will be to maximize Prowess and Ascendancy generation in order to gain her Majesty stacks and finish it off with her second Ultimate.

Additionally, Augusta starts combat with 1 Majesty thanks to her second Inherent Skill which means she won’t have ramp-up issues due to lacking an Outro initially. Finally, her first Inherent Skill makes it so Augusta gains a shield for 5s every 0.5s every time she deals damage, which means she will always have extra HP in that form. Even though the shield value is rather small and it doesn’t stack, it does add to her sustainability.

Intro Skill

Augusta’s Intro makes her restore 20% Ascendancy and full Prowess so it’s definitely a must in her rotation. Aside from that, it simply deals damage and restores Concerto Energy like all other Intros.

How to use Prowess and restore Ascendancy

Augusta’s Prowess mechanic allows her to use different Enhanced Heavy Attacks, triggered with different inputs. However, Uppercut, triggered by jumping with full Prowess, is not good as it sends her up into the air and Augusta rather be on the ground at all times to maximize her damage, so make sure not to accidentally use it.

More importantly however, she has a standard Heavy Attack variant which is called Backstep which she can follow with Spinslash by pressing Basic Attack shortly after, which is her standard combo. It can be done all the same by performing a Dodge Counter with full Prowess instead of a Heavy Attack.

Other than this, her base Resonance Skill restores full Prowess and her Intro Skill does also, which should be plenty in order to restore Ascendancy fully, provided her base Ultimate is used also — as it gives the 10% Ascendancy she’d be missing. It only requires using Ultimate with enough Resonance Energy, so make sure that condition is fulfilled by having enough Energy Regen. Depending on the team, anywhere between 110% and 120% Energy Regen should be enough for Augusta to function.

How to use Ascendancy

Ascendancy is used in order to perform 3 different Enhanced Resonance Skills — which are in reality all part of the same sequence. Simply press Resonance Skill with full Ascendancy then press Basic Attack or Resonance Skill 2 more times to leap into the air and plunge to restore Majesty to full. When this is performed, Augusta is ready to cast her second Ultimate. Also, don’t worry about getting interrupted; if that happens, Augusta can re-cast her Enhanced Skill sequence, no problem.

Second Ultimate and Outro

By holding Ultimate with 2 stacks of Majesty, Augusta enters her Second Ultimate stance for 7s. Within this duration, time is stopped and she cannot switch out or do anything except walk, dodge, and finish her rotation with 9 swift Heavy Attacks (simply performed by spamming or holding Basic Attack), then use a finishing move by pressing Basic Attack again.

Additionally, performing this sequence of attacks gives an effect for 30s to all characters in the team called Ruler’s Realm, which grants a stronger Shield to all characters who cast Intro Skill, further contributing to sustainability.

Finally, Augusta’s Outro Skill allows her to give 15% DMG Amplify to any character that she outros into, which lasts the usual 14s. It also restores 1 Majesty if that character performs their own Outro skill, and gives Augusta 15% Electro DMG Bonus for her next rotation, but be careful as all of these effects expire on swap — because of this mechanic, Augusta is much less compatible with quickswapping than most other characters as the character Augusta Outros into cannot be switched out of until they can cast their own Outro skill, since it would ruin Augusta’s Majesty stack generation, thus significantly slowing down her subsequent rotation.

Meta position & Conclusion

While Augusta’s Shield mechanics definitely make her Sustain noteworthy, it’s not her primary selling point. That selling point is her damage output. Ranking among some of the highest damaging characters in the game, Augusta places herself as a staple DPS in the meta of Wuthering Waves at the time of her release. Working brilliantly with a free unit in the form of Mortefi, her best team alongside Mortefi and Shorekeeper is easily accessible and allows her to perform at the level of the greatest DPS characters, cementing her spot in the meta.

Best Weapons

128.3%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 675 | CRIT Rate: 12.1%

A very specialized Broadblade that breaks records for the highest Base ATK in the game, providing a smaller amount of CRIT Rate in exchange, while giving Heavy Attack DMG Bonus, ATK%, and allowing Heavy Attack DMG to ignore target DEF when applying shields up to 36% DEF at 5 stacks. While this weapon does have ramp-up on its DEF ignore effect, it's easily the best choice for Augusta bar none, as this weapon is specialized to be used by her in order to make full use of its effect.

120.4%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | CRIT DMG: 48.6%

Jiyan's Signature weapon is fantastic on Augusta and has similar performance to even her Signature weapon thanks to its easy to acquire 48% Heavy Attack DMG Bonus increase, as well as 12% general DMG Bonus, good Base ATK and CRIT DMG stats.

108.4%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | CRIT Rate: 24.3%

While this weapon focuses on boosting Resonance Skill damage, Jinhsi's Signature is still great on Augusta as she does deal some amount of Skill damage and benefits from its good Base ATK, as well as its DMG Bonus and CRIT Rate increasing effects.

104.0%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | CRIT DMG: 48.6%

This Broadblade lacks the extra punch that the above options do as its passive effect is entirely useless on Augusta. It does buff Mortefi's DMG if he is present on the team, however he is far from dealing most of the damage in the team and Augusta only uses this Broadblade for its ATK and CRIT DMG stats, which makes it rank lower than above options.

100%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | ATK: 36.4%

The best permanently available option for Augusta who benefits from its Energy Regen boosting effect but its Resonance Liberation DMG increase is useless on her, which makes it rank below all limited options. Nonetheless very much usable on Augusta who performs fantastically even with this weapon equipped.

98.6%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | CRIT DMG: 40.5%

The new Battle Pass Broadblade is amazing on Augusta and is her best 4* option bar none as it increases ATK, Heavy Attack DMG Bonus and CRIT DMG by massive amounts especially at Rank 5. Unfortunately, its lower-end Base ATK makes it rank below all 5-star options, but it remains a good choice if you don't wish to invest any pulls into Augusta and rather spend for this weapon instead.

96.7%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | CRIT Rate: 20.2%

This Battle Pass weapon also gives Augusta good stats, particularly ATK and CRIT Rate, but suffers like all other 4-star weapons from low Base ATK which causes it to perform lower than all 5-star options. However it remains very much usable on Augusta.

89.3%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 462 | ATK: 18.2%

The best non-Battle Pass 4-star for Augusta as it gives her some flat Resonance Energy which means she doesn't need any Energy Regen on her build to work, however only increasing ATK isn't enough to make it stand out above other options.

85.7%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | ATK: 30.3%

Similar to Waning Redshift but focuses even more on increasing ATK after using multiple Resonance Skills, which Augusta isn't able to fully stack, making it lag behind other choices in terms of performance.

81.3%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 462 | ATK: 18.2%

Last resort option if none of the above weapons are owned. Solely used as an ATK stat-stick as its passive is entirely unused on Augusta, but accessible as a guarantee thanks to being craftable.
Best Echo Sets

Best Echo Sets show the best sets that support the main character playstyle and work out of the box while the Special Echo Sets either are situational, support an alternative playstyle or are targeted toward min-maxers. The percentage numbers showcase the relative DPS increase when you take into account the set bonus only. For some characters there's no DPS (or its equivalent) available and in that case we listed the sets in the order of priority.

100%

3 Set: Upon gaining a Shield, increase the Resonator's ATK by 6% and Crit. DMG by 4% for 4s. This effect can be triggered once every 0.5s and stacks up to 5 times.

Augusta's best set bar none. Increases ATK and CRIT DMG by 6% and 4% for 4s respectively when a Shield is applied to the equipped character, stacking up to 5 times every 0.5s. This totals to 30% ATK and 20% CRIT DMG, which is the best set for Augusta in specific as she's the only character in the game who's able to fully stack up this effect.

Best Combined with your choice of:

  • 2P Void Thunder (Recommended)
  • 2P Lingering Tunes
  • 2P Moonlit Clouds (when lacking Energy Regen)

Pick and choose based on your best substats due to their closeness in performance (be wary of stacking Energy Regen in excess however).

Below you can find Main Echo options that you should be using with the set:

  • Echo Image
    The False Sovereign
    - A Transform and Summon echo similar to Nightmare: Kelpie, which gives 12% Electro and 12% Heavy DMG Bonus passively in the main slot, and unconditionally summons the Echo to deal DMG whenever an Intro skill is triggered, additionally having Transform casts for extra damage. One of them is typically used at the end of a rotation, the second cast is a bit more difficult to exploit and may require quickswapping to be utilized (difficult in a team with Augusta but not impossible). The best Echo for Augusta in any situation.

91.3%

2 Set: Electro DMG increases by 10%.

5 Set: Upon using Heavy Attack or Resonance Skill, Electro DMG increases by 15%, stacking up to 2 times, each stack lasting for 15s.

Generalist Electro damage set that gives a total of 40% Electro DMG after casting 2 Heavy Attacks and/or Resonance Skills. While this is easily stacked up by Augusta, it pales in comparison to the higher amount of buffing her signature set, Crown of Valor, provides.

Below you can find Main Echo options that you should be using with the set:

  • Sentry Construct
    Nightmare: Tempest Mephis
    - Offers an unconditional 12% Electro DMG and 12% Resonance Skill DMG boost when placed in the Main Echo slot, making it a solid choice for Electro focused resonators who emphasize Resonance Skill damage alongside the 5P Void Thunder set bonus. While Augusta doesn't primarily deal Resonance Skill damage and only deals a small amount of it, it's the best option she has in the Void Thunder set.

Rotation

Below you can find optimal rotation (or rotations) for Augusta. The total time needed to perform it is 11.17 seconds. When selecting the rotations we prioritized achieving 100 Concerto as fast as possible and once that condition was fulfilled, we focused on maximizing the damage output. As or if new and more optimal rotations are found, we'll update the characters calculations as needed.

Core Rotation

Augusta aims to stack Ascendancy as quickly as possible in order to generate Majesty and cast her second Ultimate’s attack sequence, finishing her rotation. Below is the best way to do so.

Echo Timing: Best used right at the end of the whole rotation (make sure to Swap Cancel it immediately after casting in order to optimize).

Additional Tips & Tricks

Augusta’s core rotation is extremely simple with little to no tricks to it. This is because she will be under an Amplify Outro boost in her best teams, and switching out of Augusta during her rotation instantly ends this kind of buff. Additionally, her Outro skill mechanic forces the next character she Outros into not to be switched out of, and half of her damage is concentrated in abilities before her second Ultimate — all of this to say, she’s near-incompatible with quickswap playstyles.

The best we can work with is some animation cancels and an extra The False Sovereign transform Echo cast prior to her rotation as well as when she ends it, performed at some point in your secondary buffer’s rotation, as follows:

  • After your third character (the one Augusta has switched into) has cast their own Outro, try to cast one The False Sovereign active Echo Skill where it makes sense to do so (try to Swap Cancel an ability of your secondary character). If this isn’t possible to do without losing rotation time, then do not consider doing this.
  • When Augusta finishes her second Ultimate attack sequence, make sure to cast one The False Sovereign active Echo Skill before immediately switching out to cast her Outro.
  • Augusta can cancel the endlag on the Spinslashes in her rotation. What we mean is when the damage of Spinslash has fully come out, she can immediately follow with abilities that can chain together quicker than simply letting the animation fully play out, as follows:
    • The first Spinslash’s endlag can be cancelled by her base Resonance Skill;
    • The second Spinslash’s endlag can be cancelled by her base Ultimate.

And to conclude, a few extra tips:

  • Augusta can cancel the endlag on one of the Spinslashes in her rotation. What we mean is when the damage of the second Spinslash has fully come out, she can immediately follow with her Ultimate which can chain together quicker than simply letting the animation fully play out: hence, the second Spinslash’s endlag can be cancelled by her base Ultimate.
  • If needed, since Augusta and her teammates have quick rotations, when playing optimally some filler attacks may need to be added depending on the team. In Augusta’s case, this isn’t a problem: simply go for a few normal attacks into an extra Backstep + Spinslash combo, or go for a Heavy Attack, cancel the endlag with a dash (else you would follow up with the undesirable Uppercut Heavy Attack) and then do the Backstep + Spinslash combo as normal (this second variant will be quicker).

Additional warning: Augusta’s second Ultimate field instantly kills all on-field entities, including things such as Phrolova’s Hecate. This makes the synergy between the two close to unusable and should be considered when teambuilding.

Additional information

The numbers below show the character's DPS (Damage Per Second) and DMG (total damage done). When selecting the rotations we prioritized achieving 100 Concerto as fast as possible and once that condition was fulfilled, we focused on maximizing the damage output. As or if new and more optimal rotations are found, we'll update the characters calculations as needed. Listed character calculations are done without buffs or any damage contribution from teammates (full solo). They only include what the character, their Weapon, Echo and gear are capable of during their ideal Burst or Concerto rotation when starting with their Intro and Resonance Liberation available.

Do note that DPS and DMG aren’t perfect metrics for a character’s individual value and should be taken with a grain of salt. Anything pertaining a character’s relevance in the meta is addressed in our Review and Tier List, which the numbers below shouldn’t be used for as an end-all-be-all to. Instead, DPS and DMG are good metrics for a character’s sequence value and comparison between an individual character’s different rotations. We recommend using those metrics for such purposes.
