·Mualani mounts her Sharky Surfboard, increasing Mualani's Movement SPD and interruption resistance. Mualani can move on water and liquid Phlogiston while this state is active, and she will take no DMG from the latter.

While in an area with Phlogiston Mechanics within Natlan, she can use Nightsoul Transmission: Mualani. When the active character is currently sprinting, swimming, in a movement mode caused by certain Talents, or at a certain height in the air, the following will trigger when switching to Mualani: Mualani will enter the Nightsoul's Blessing state and gain 40 Nightsoul points. Nightsoul Transmission can be triggered once every 10s by your own team.
Additionally, Mualani's Nightsoul point or Phlogiston consumption while moving on water and Liquid Phlogiston during Nightsoul's Blessing is decreased by 75% while in Natlan, and her Nightsoul point consumption is decreased by 35% while doing the same outside Natlan.

Short Kit Explanation
Mualani is a 5-star Hydro Catalyst character commonly played as an on-field DPS. Her gameplay consists of building up stacks while in Nightsoul state to unleash special Normal Attacks that can additionally be Vaporized for massive damage. As a Nightsoul character, she has access to and utilizes Nightsoul mechanics.
Mualani’s Skill is responsible for granting her Nightsoul’s Blessing, causing her to board her Sharky Surfboard and gain 60 Nightsoul points, which are consumed at a rate of 10 per second until fully depleted and her Skill ends. While riding her Sharky Surfboard, her Normal Attacks are instead converted into “Sharky’s Bite” which can be used once every 1.8 seconds and be cast mid-air, dealing damage based on Mualani’s Max HP. Touching enemies during this state grants them “Marked as Prey”, and allows Mualani to gain 1 stack of “Wave Momentum”, on a cooldown of 0.7 seconds per enemy. These can be consumed to increase the damage of Sharky’s Bite - at 3 stacks, they are further enhanced to “Surging Sharky’s Bite” which gains an additional increase. When hitting an enemy with Marked as Prey, she additionally can fire “Shark Missiles” with an equal multiplier to 5 other enemies with the status before removing Marked as Prey from all damaged targets; the final damage is reduced by 14% if two targets were damaged and by 28% if three or more were hit. Mualani generates 5 Hydro particles after her first Sharky’s Bite and her Skill’s short 6s cooldown only starts when the Skill ends. Thanks to the long interval between Surging Sharky’s Bite, their large multiplier can easily be taken further advantage of through the Vaporize reaction.
Thanks to her first Ascension Passive, her Surging Sharky’s bite additionally generates a “Puffer” up to twice per Nightsoul’s Blessing; these move to reach Mualani and grant her 20 Nightsoul points when collected. This extends the state, and can allow her to consistently perform 3 Surging Sharky’s Bite per Nightsoul’s Blessing.
Mualani’s Burst is a simple damage nuke that fires a “Super Shark missile” to deal AoE Hydro damage; its multiplier can additionally be increased up to three times thanks to her second Ascension Passive, though the bonus is hardly necessary to achieve fantastic damage with the ability.
Finally, Mualani’s standard Normal Attacks are unremarkable but are occasionally used for Hydro application to set up buffs appropriately.
NIGHTSOUL
Nightsoul is a mechanic involving Natlanese characters with two distinct components: “Nightsoul Blessing” and “Nightsoul Burst”. Nightsoul Blessing is a state allowing for the generation and/or consumption of Nightsoul points, with many Natlan character kits revolving around triggering effects based on this in some way.
Nightsoul Bursts, on the other hand, is an effect triggered whenever dealing Elemental damage while a Natlanese character is in the party, with the cooldown on its trigger decreasing from 18 to 12 to the minimum of 9 for each Natlanese character present; note that Pyro Traveler is not considered to be Natlanese despite access to Nightsoul mechanics. While having no effect on its own, many character abilities and some artifact set effects only activate when a Nightsoul Burst is triggered, often granting bonuses which can vary in usefulness but are rarely tied to core functionality.
How to Play
(Mechanics & Gameplay Loop)
Mualani enters on field after the team buffs are set up and take advantage of Pyro appliers off-field during the ~2s between one Surging Bite and another to guarantee a forward vaporize on the enemy. The number of Surging Sharky’s Bites as well as her Burst’s optimal usage vary based on Constellation and discussed in more detail there.
If the enemy moves a lot, a trick to not miss Sharky’s Bites is to jump right before pressing the Normal Attack input. Her Burst is also best cast when she is right next to an enemy; this allows it to instantly explode rather than needing to be fired as a projectile and “seek” the enemy, allowing for far more consistency on when it hits and makes Vaporizing all her attacks much simpler.

Mualani’s combos center around getting as many fully-stacked Sharky’s Bites as she can in the enemy scenario. In multi-target, she can get several more of these hits but will always be gated by the Pyro application rate of the team.
For future reference, N(3) refers to a Sharky’s Bite with 3 Wave Momentum stacks, and all combos assume single-target scenarios.

E 3N(3) (Q when available)
The simplest combo for Mualani, done in teams where Pyro application is consistent to allow for 3 vapes + burst vape in a single field time.
E N(3) Q/N(3) N(3)
This combo is the only way to maintain enough buff uptime for all of Mualani’s hits, and even then it is pretty tight. When using Mualani’s burst, it should be used after walking up to the enemy and obtaining one Momentum stack before activating her burst. This is the only way to still be able to have enough time to get another normal attack in for the rotation due to the Nightsoul point consumption. This also helps with getting close enough to the enemy to get the Burst hit immediately instead of it flying off.
Change nothing from C0, just buffs the first bite. Less potential damage gain, but very easy to play around.

This split rotation allows Mualani to get two C1-buffed Sharky’s Bites and generate more particles to be able to burst every rotation. Depending on the team, this can be difficult as you are again gated heavily by the Pyro application of the team. For Mualani’s Hexerei teams, the optimized rotations are:
Mavuika: Mona E -> Mavuika QE N1 -> Mona Q N1 -> Sucrose Ed N1 -> Mualani E N(3) EQ -> Mona N1C -> Sucrose Ed N1 -> Mualani E N(3) E

Depending on the combat situation, it can be optimal to perform additional Surging Sharky’s Bites to take advantage of a boss’ DPS windows rather than maintaining the above rotation.

Because of the extra Sharky’s Bite, Mualani in Hexerei teams now needs to play modified rotations in order to make the most of it. This means that split rotations are the only way to truly take advantage of the C2 and C1. The setup changes a bit to push the Pyro applicant to be right before Mualani’s first field time:

Mualani Build
Mualani’s Signature - Surf’s Up - is one of her best options; however, a highly refined Sacrificial Jade can perform extremely similarly provided that one can build around the extreme amount of CRIT Rate it provides. Reliquary of Truth is her next best option, with Tome of the Eternal Flow performing similar to Widsith or an unrefined Sacrificial Jade. While other 5* stat sticks perform well, they are not meaningfully better than Ring of Yaxche which serves as her F2P option. A highly refined Waveriding Whirl can be good if used with Mona due to allowing for consistent Bursts every rotation, but should not be considered otherwise.
