Durin is a 5-star Pyro Sword user who can be played off-field as both a Main DPS or a Sub-DPS. He achieves this through swapping between two different forms with his Skill, altering his Burst to either use Melt and Vaporize to benefit his own damage or take advantage of the other Pyro reactions to provide debuffs for the team. As a Hexerei unit, he also features important synergies with other characters in the faction.
Thus, while Durin’s Elemental Burst is the centrepiece of his kit, all his abilities are important as they converge to decide his Burst’s effects. This is most prominently seen in his Elemental Skill, which allows for his aforementioned form switching; upon use, Durin can follow it up with another cast of his Skill to enter the “Confirmation of Purity” state or by using an enhanced Normal Attack which puts him in the “Denial of Darkness” state. These will henceforth be referred to as the Light and Dark states, respectively. By default, Durin is in his Light state; however, his Elemental Skill is still worth executing in full, as it has both good particle generation but also a massive Energy refund for Durin himself.
Though his Light and Dark states do influence his Burst itself, their purpose is more clearly seen through his first Ascension Passive, which is activated when his Burst is used: Dark Durin increases his own Melt and Vaporize damage by 40%, while Light Durin interacts provides 20% RES Shred to the elements involved for 6 seconds when any other Pyro reaction is triggered. When keeping in mind that Melt and Vaporize also inherently amplify Durin’s damage when triggered by him, it becomes clear that Dark Durin is focused around maximizing his own damage and that Light Durin is more of a team player. His Hexerei Passive is tied to his first Ascension Passive, increasing its effects by 75% when active; in other words, Dark Durin now gains a 70% DMG Bonus for Melt and Vaporize, and Light Durin provides 35% RES Shred. These are significant bonuses that will often be active as many of Durin’s best synergies are with other Hexerei characters, but are not necessary for Durin to be effective.
With all that out of the way, Durin’s Elemental Burst on its own merits is fairly simple. Using it allows Durin to deal consistent Pyro damage to enemies even from off-field; Light Durin deals a weaker AoE hit every second, while Dark Durin deals a stronger single-target instance of damage every 1.25 seconds. Against the same enemy, Durin can apply Pyro - and thus trigger related reactions - on every other hit of his Burst. Since it only has an 18-second cooldown with a 20-second uptime and Durin himself gains a large Energy refund from his Skill, Durin rarely needs much micromanagement to use his Burst every rotation and access most of his kit's damage and supportive abilities. It’s worth noting that Durin’s Burst is dynamic, meaning its damage is decided based on Durin’s current stats and relevant buffs when the damage is dealt. This means Durin cannot make use of buffs which only affect the active character when off-field, and that he may need buffs on him to be reapplied so that they affect the full duration of his Burst.
His second Ascension Passive is also tied to his Burst, granting him 10 “Primordial Fusion” stacks. He consumes exactly one stack each time his Burst deals damage - regardless of how many enemies are hit - to increase the final damage dealt by his Burst based on his ATK, with an increase of up to 75% at 2500 ATK. While this does not last the full duration of his Burst, it is nonetheless a potent damage increase, and moreover ensures Durin is rewarded for running shorter rotations despite his Burst’s lengthy duration.
Finally, beyond helping Durin enter Dark form after using his Elemental Skill, Durin’s Normal Attacks are generally irrelevant and unspectacular. Nonetheless, they can see occasional use when Durin is used on-field - either due to gaps in rotation time, or to maximize the buffs Durin’s Burst receives.

Characters part of the Hexerei faction, after completing their Witch’s Rite Story Quest, unlock special Passive abilities in combat. These are activated when there are 2 Hexerei characters on the team, with Durin themselves counting as one.
The notation used to refer to combat inputs in this section will be as follows:
As mentioned above, Durin can swap between two different modes based on whether he follows his initial Elemental Skill cast by recasting his Skill or using an enhanced Normal Attack. These influence the effects his Burst has.
E E Q
Durin’s default state, and the one he will end up using in most teams due to the RES Shred it provides to the elements involved in Pyro reactions other than Melt and Vaporize. Note that the RES Shred has a short 6s duration, meaning Durin ideally wants consistent Pyro reactions to be triggered for uptime.
E N1 Q
Increases Durin’s own Melt and Vaporize damage, and thus the form he uses when paired with characters that allow him to trigger said reactions reliably. Durin is usually not worth pairing with characters who want to trigger Melt or Vaporize, as he can interfere with their ability to do so and cannot inherently provide any supportive abilities in this form.
E Q E/N1
If a Burst is available before generating extra energy with his Skill, this combo can slightly lower his field time by cancelling part of the Skill animation with the Burst. This works for both modes, but Dark Durin can only perform this from the second rotation onwards due to having to manually switch form during the first rotation. The Pyro application after his Burst can also result in a loss of Melts when playing Dark Durin on some teams.
Durin’s pull value is centred on the fact that in exchange for his flexibility as a unit - both in terms of role and in terms of team options - his team options often lack in ceiling potential. Light Durin is a Best-in-Slot support for many characters, such as Varka, Clorinde, and Kinich, while allowing for some flexibility in teambuilding thanks to his Hexerei synergies. Meanwhile, Dark Durin is a capable carry, especially in tandem with an on-field enabler DPS such as Lohen. In both cases, however, he falls short of performing similarly to the top teams in the game.
This is additionally complicated by the presence of Nicole. Nicole is even more flexible than Light Durin, who often competes with her - and loses - if vying for the same slot, with many characters often preferring them to be used in tandem. Dark Durin similarly benefits heavily from having Nicole on his teams, without whom he is often subpar as a DPS. This means that Nicole is often the better pull choice between the two for an account, while players with Nicole may be able to substitute a lack of Durin with greater ease.
All that being said, Nicole and Durin form a very strong and flexible core together, able to prop up many DPS units to competitive levels to being able to carry all on their own, while still being decent units when separated. They also both offer good vertical investment, often being better than the vertical options of the carries they’re paired with! Thus, they can be a good pull for those who have already invested into the carries they can support, or serve as a good pull for players who already have a high ceiling team and are looking to patch holes in their account.
A Day Carved From Rising WindsWhile indisputably best for Durin’s own damage, some of Light Durin’s teams tend to prefer him on a more supportive Set. Still strong, sometimes optimal, and scales well with investment into Durin.
Celestial GiftDurin’s best option if there are no other viable holders on the team, though it is usually better to run the Set on a teammate (such as Nicole) if possible.
Emblem of Severed FateA reasonable option if all of the Energy Recharge is able to be utilized.
Noblesse ObligeA good option if Durin if the team already has a better holder for Celestial Gift. The Set is still reasonable for Durin’s own damage, but is only worth using if his damage contribution is significantly dwarfed by an ATK-scaling teammate.
A Day Carved From Rising WindsDurin’s Best-In-Slot in almost all situations, providing him great stats.
Crimson Witch of FlamesA reasonable alternative if the player already has a good Set.
