Wriothesley is a 5-star Cryo Catalyst character who is most commonly played as an on-field Stellar-Conduct Main DPS. His kit features a Skill state which causes his Normal Attacks to drain his HP, allowing access to empowered Charged Attacks at certain health thresholds. These - alongside the 3rd and 5th hit of his Normal Attacks - can deal large direct Stellar-Conduct damage once the reaction is triggered.
Stellar-Conduct replaces the Superconduct reaction when certain characters are on the team. This reaction deals no damage when triggered, instead spawning a Starlight Prism on the ground, converting the surrounding area into a Polestar Field. Being within this field allows characters to activate any “Radiance: Stellar-Conduct” effects in their kit - many of which allow characters to deal direct Stellar-Conduct damage. Additionally the Polestar Field will record and store Electro and Cryo applications, releasing them every 4 seconds in the form of a teamwide Electro and Cryo DMG Bonus buff and a Base Reaction Coefficient for direct Stellar-Conduct damage; these buffs start at 29% and 1.45 at one stack respectively, increasing by 1% and 0.05 for each stack up to a maximum of 40% and 2.
Note that if both Stellar-Conduct and Stellar-Swirl are triggered by the team, Stellar-Conduct will take priority.
Similar to damaging reactions, direct Stellar-Conduct damage scales with EM and Reaction Damage bonuses, while also ignoring Enemy DEF. It also does not benefit from standard DMG% (e.g. Cryo DMG%, Normal Attack DMG%, etc.). However, unlike typical reaction damage, it can also CRIT, making CRIT stats extremely valuable for Stellar DPS and Sub-DPS characters. Direct Stellar-Conduct damage is considered to be of the element of the unit dealing the damage and is based on the multiplier and scaling stat listed in the Talent description as opposed to the character’s level, with Stellar-Conduct damage additionally being multiplied by the previously mentioned Base Reaction Coefficient.
As alluded to above, Wriothesley’s kit is centred around his Skill and the “Chilling Penalty” state it grants. When above 50% HP, the state increases his resistance to interruption and modifies his Normal Attacks: enhancing them with an additional modifier to their base damage while causing them to drain 4.5% of his Max HP with each hit. Furthermore, the state is tied to the extra Passive from his buff that replaces his first Ascension Passive. This grants him unconditional access to a special Charged Attack when below 60% of his Max HP, which can also restore 30% of his Max HP once every 2 seconds when used; on top of this, it allows this special Charged Attack alongside the enhanced 3rd and 5th hits of his Normal Attack to deal direct Stellar-Conduct damage. Since this makes up the vast majority of his damage, his playstyle consists of juggling his Charged and Normal Attacks - trying to consistently dip below 60% Max HP for the former but remaining above 50% for the latter. His second Ascension Passive plays into this by granting him a 6% ATK buff after each HP fluctuation, capping out at 30% at 5 stacks.
Wriothesley’s Normal Attack string has 5 attacks, with the 4th consisting of two separate hits which each trigger the HP drain from his Skill - meaning the full string drains 27% of his health when executed. Furthermore, when using Wriothesley’s Skill or Dash, the combo counter of his Normal Attacks is not reset and will continue from the next attack in the string; this allows Wriothesley to chase enemies without interrupting his combos, while allowing for additional animation cancels.
Without Radiance: Stellar-Conduct, he can only gain a special Charged Attack once every 5 seconds - restoring 30% of his Max HP and gaining a 50% DMG Bonus. This does not deal direct Stellar-Conduct damage, nor do his Burst or unenhanced Normal Attacks, making them relatively unremarkable. Finally, thanks to the “To Temper Thyself and Journey Far” recurring event, Wriothesley has relatively easy access to his first Constellation. This allows his special Charged Attack to extend his Skill state by 4 seconds, once per Skill use; with Radiance: Stellar-Conduct, Wriothesley’s 5th enhanced Normal Attack and enhanced Charged Attack now also grant each other a 50% Stellar-Conduct DMG buff for 5 seconds, making this an excellent boost to his overall damage output. The impact to his kit outside of Radiance: Stellar-Conduct is even larger, guaranteeing him a special Charged Attack after his fifth Normal Attack and granting it a 200% DMG Bonus. However, this does not make his non-Stellar teams even remotely competitive with their Stellar counterparts.
The following sections will assume Wriothesley is being played on a Stellar-Conduct team, where his gameplay loop can be summarized as follows,
Setup buffs and consistent Electro application for Wriothesley alongside a teammate that enables Stellar-Conduct.
Use Wriothesley’s Skill, followed by his on-field combos:
Typically, his on-field Combos involve spamming his full 5-hit Normal Attack string, with a Charged Attack at the end if below 60% HP.
However, this can be varied based on weapon or if enemy hits allow Wriothesley to go below 60% HP earlier.
Further optimizations will be discussed in the section below.
The notation used to refer to combat inputs in this section will be as follows:
One special aspect of Wriothesley’s Normal Attacks is that Dashes or his Skill cast do not interrupt the combo count on the attack string; this means that you can perform a normal attack, N1, and then use his skill afterwards and then continue with N2-5 afterwards. The notation for this is N1E#5 to represent using an N1, then Skill, then continuing his Normal Attacks until N5.
Wriothesley’s combos are optimized around ensuring his HP stays above 50% for his enhanced Normal Attacks, while trying to dip below 60% to maximize the use of his special Charged Attack while still performing his N3 and N5. Due to the duration extension, this causes his combos to change at Constellation 1. Furthermore, his first rotation also will be dissimilar from his rest due to starting at 100% HP.
It’s worth noting that in practice, missing Normal Attacks due to enemy movement and incoming damage will both cause his HP fluctuation to no longer sync up with the thresholds used for the combos below. There are ways to mitigate this or even turn it to his advantage: taking damage allows for a quicker cast of his special Charged Attack for a damage increase, while missing attacks can allow him to potentially sneak in an extra N3 or N5 cast during his field time. However, it also means that the following combos are often only feasible when played with a shielder against enemies that are not highly mobile; even in this case, it can be optimal to try and take damage during the first rotation to speed up his HP loss.
First rotation: N1E#5(C)d 2N5Cd
Subsequent rotations: E 2[N5Cd] N5d N2Cd / E N5Cd N2(C)d 2[N5Cd]
First rotation: E N5d 3N5Cd N3
2nd rotation: N1E#5Cd 3[N5Cd] N3
3rd rotation: N1E#5Cd 3[N5Cd] N3
4th rotation: N1E#5Cd 2[N5Cd] N5d N1Cd N3
5th rotation: N1E#5Cd 3[N5Cd] N3
6th rotation: N1E#5Cd 2[N5Cd] N5d N1Cd N3
And then these two combos alternate forever.
A simpler but less optimized rule of thumb to follow for C1 combos is to spam N5, followed by a Charged Attack and Dash Cancel if available; if not, this can be Dash Cancelled and an N3Cd can be performed immediately after.
Disenchantment in Deep ShadowWriothesley’s best option in almost all circumstances, albeit not by a significant margin over Marechaussee.
Marechaussee HunterA close runner-up in performance, and better to use if a good set is already available or it would be more resin-efficient to farm. The descriptions stating that his abilities do a portion of their original Cryo damage as Stellar-Conduct damage does not mean Wriothesley benefits from boosts that would not typically apply to Stellar-Conduct damage, such as Cryo DMG Bonus or Shenhe’s Icy Quills.

C65.9%Wriothesley should be paired with a unit who can enable his Radiance: Stellar-Conduct buffs. Currently, Odette is the only synergistic option, with Cryo Traveler forced to play as a quickswap DPS while Sandrone being an entirely dead slot; additionally, he also requires an Electro character to help trigger the reaction. Furthermore, Wriothesley should not be paired with healers if they need to cast their healing abilities to contribute to the team.
