Great sustain that gives both interruption resistance and healing
Beneficial for Stellar Swirl teams and most Hydro and Cryo carries
Easy to build and very F2P friendly
Will seize the means of production
Nonexistent personal DMG on best teams
Hydro application can interrupt Stellar Swirl triggers
Cannot enable Stellar Swirl despite being a premium support for it
Vodyanitsa is a 5-star Hydro Catalyst character who is most commonly played as a support and sustain for Hydro, Cryo, and Stellar Swirl DPS units. She uses her Skill to provide a host of benefits: healing, interruption resistance, Hydro application, RES Shred, and additional damage bonuses. It is important to note that while she is capable of supporting Stellar Swirl, she does not enable the reaction herself.
Stellar Swirl is a reaction that replaces Cryo Swirl when certain characters are on the team, activating Radiance: Stellar Swirl effects for 8 seconds when triggered. It also deals Anemo Stellar Swirl reaction damage to the target and creates a “Level 1” Vortex; this Vortex levels up after Stellar Swirl is triggered two additional times, exploding after 3 seconds or 5 additional Stellar Swirl triggers to deal Cryo Stellar Swirl reaction damage based on the Vortex’s level. A large jump can be performed just after the Vortex explodes, though this is generally impractical to use.
Similar to other damaging reactions, Stellar damage scales with Elemental Mastery, reaction damage bonuses, ignores DEF, and does not benefit from standard DMG% - unlike typical reactions, it can also CRIT. Stellar Swirl damage from reactions also takes into account the level and stats of all characters who contributed to triggering reaction based on their damage dealt to the enemy: 60% of the stats of the strongest participant, 30% of the second, and 5% for the third and fourth. Direct Stellar damage is considered to be of the element of the unit dealing it and is based on the multiplier and the scaling stat listed in the ability instead of level.
Vodyanitsa’s kit largely revolves around her Skill and the Song of Ages Past effect it grants her. This allows Vodyanitsa to grant the active character resistance to interruption akin to Xingqiu’s Rainswords, and additionally heals them every 1.5 seconds based on her Max HP. On top of this, she also summons “microphones” near the enemy every 3 seconds that deal a minor instance of Hydro damage; their true value lies in their ability to apply a massive RES Shred debuff when hitting enemies, up to 30% at Talent Level 10. Her first Ascension Passive also allows her Skill to provide a 35% RES Shred debuff to Anemo whenever a Stellar Swirl Vortex is created or detonated, and provides some quality-of-life by causing Radiance: Stellar Swirl effects on allies to last 4 seconds longer. In tandem with her excellent supportive gear options, this gives her great value at a baseline - even working well with characters like Sandrone despite a lack of further synergy.
Her second Ascension Passive then adds yet another entry to this list of effects, causing her Skill cast to grant 25 stacks of “Lead Vocal” and 10 stacks of “Ensemble” to Vodyanitsa while resetting existing stacks. These stacks are consumed by on-field and off-field allies respectively whenever either Hydro or Cryo damage is dealt to increase it; if a Stellar Swirl Vortex is present or within 5 seconds of its detonation, this is instead changed to only be consumed when Stellar Swirl damage is dealt. The increase itself is based on her HP in excess of 40000, reaching its maximum value of 3500 and 6500 when Vodyanitsa has 65000 HP. This value is then subsequently combined with other multipliers of the character triggering them such as CRIT and added onto the final damage. Such buffs are often referred to as “quills” by the community, due to the mechanic being first seen on Shenhe’s Icy Quills.
A final point to note about Vodyanitsa’s Skill is that despite having a duration and cooldown of 16 seconds, it is not necessary to cast it immediately – her debuffs all last 6 after their application and her second Ascension Passive stacks last for 30 seconds, meaning its effective duration is typically longer.
Her Elemental Burst is much simpler, functioning as a damage nuke based on her Max HP that gains a massive additional multiplier if used while her Skill is active. While capable of outputting some ridiculous numbers, it is rare that it lives up to its potential on many teams as Vodyanitsa is often not buffed significantly and further sacrifices offensive stats to maximize her HP due to her steep requirements.
Lastly, Vodyanitsa’s Normal Attacks are subpar and only really used if their Hydro application is needed.
In most of her best teams, Vodyanitsa simply uses her Skill before swapping; if holding Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers, she should do this immediately before the main DPS hits the field. When supporting weaker Hydro carries, or if there is time to kill in the rotation with nothing better to fill it, Vodyanitsa can also opt to use her Burst if available.
Hymn of the MaelstromR1103.7%Skirk Team - TeamVodyanitsa’s signature and generic best in slot, providing a huge amount of HP% for Vodyanitsa while increasing the active character’s ATK. However, Skirk often also runs Furina, making Vodyanitsa’s stat goals far easier to reach even without her signature thanks to Hydro resonance; even if this is not the case, her signature is not a massive increase - at maximum being a 5-6% increase.
Thrilling Tales of Dragon SlayersR5101%Skirk Team - TeamMost of Skirk’s rotations are longer than 20s, allowing Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers to generally active every rotation and making it a very potent option.
Thrilling Tales of Dragon SlayersR5100%Skirk Team - TeamEven if only active every 2 rotations, TTDS is the best F2P option for Vodyanitsa, providing HP% for her and an ATK buff for the on-fielder.
Hymn of the MaelstromR1106%Vesna Team - TeamHer signature has slightly more value in these teams due to their rotations typically being <20s and Vodyanitsa’s stat goals being harder to meet.
Thrilling Tales of Dragon SlayersR5100%Vesna Team - TeamEven if only active every 2 rotations, TTDS is usually the best F2P option for Vodyanitsa, providing HP% for her and an ATK buff for the on-fielder.
Prototype AmberR597.4%Vesna Team - TeamPrototype Amber is primarily a HP% stat stick for Vodyanitsa to maximize the value of her quills. Worse than TTDS for Vesna, but wins out with Mizuki and other DPS characters who do not scale off of ATK.
Other options such as Jadefall Splendor, Everlasting Moonglow, and R5 Sacrificial Jade can also be used for this purpose. Both Prototype Amber and Sacrificial Jade also gain value in teams where Vodyanitsa uses her Burst.
Tenacity of the MillelithSince Vodyanitsa almost never wants to burst, ToM is her strongest option. Gives her HP% while providing a teamwide ATK buff with fantastic uptime.Healing Bonus or CRIT can be considered if already at 65000 HP, though this is unlikely and the benefits from these stats are negligible.
